Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver a closing message to voters on Tuesday in a speech on the National Mall in Washington.
She plans to make one last case to the public and contrast herself with former President Donald Trump, according to people familiar with the planning and a permit application obtained by the Washington Post. The backdrop of the National Mall was reportedly chosen to emphasize that contrast.
A Harris campaign spokesperson told the Washington Post that the exact message of her speech has not yet been finalized, but Harris will mention Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol as she delivers the speech near where Trump delivered his own “Stop the Steal” speech that day. According to those familiar with the planning, the speech will be more broad than just focusing on what she views as the threat Trump poses to democracy.
Harris officials were focused on finding a symbolic venue for the closing days of the campaign, beyond just that of a campaign rally in a swing state. While Harris has spent most of her time campaigning in battleground states for weeks, the closing message of the campaign is designed to speak to the public more in a more broad manner.
The application for the permit does not include too many details about the event, but it is described as “First Amendment Activity: Political Speech” with four to five people and elected officials scheduled to give speeches. The application includes requested details of a 40-foot stage, 5,000 handheld signs, 1,000 chairs, 25 tables, and 50 portable restrooms, according to the application.

Organizers requested the National Mall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., but information about when the event would begin was not provided.
