Eric Schmitt turns down bid to lead NRSC

.

Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) won’t be running to become chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee in 2026.

A senior aide confirmed to the Hill that Schmitt has no intention to run. The Washington Examiner reached his office for comment.

Schmitt is rumored to be on former President Donald Trump’s short list for attorney general. He would next be up for reelection in the Senate in 2029.

The current chairman is Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), who will be up for reelection in the Senate in 2026. Daines has served in the Senate since 2014 and on the NRSC since 2023.

This election could prove successful for the NRSC as the committee anticipates to flip the Senate seats in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Montana, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

The Democrats presently have the majority with 50 senators, plus Vice President Kamala Harris over the chamber.
