Republicans flock to side of Pennsylvania incumbent facing tough fight

Republicans are flocking to the aid of Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) after new polling shows him trailing his Democratic opponent.

Perry, a former House Freedom Caucus leader, has served six terms as one of the most conservative members of Congress. Though the Cook Political Report still holds the district as a 5-point GOP advantage, new polling has shown positive signs for former local news anchor and Democratic challenger Janelle Stelson, propelled by major fundraising totals. To shore up support, House Republicans are traveling to the south central district to help him out.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is scheduled to travel to the district on Friday to campaign for Perry, while the House Freedom Caucus is sending staff to canvass for him.

“When you’re in one of these races, you always want as much help as you can get,” Perry told Punchbowl News. “I’m confident that leadership is going to look at it and determine what the appropriate level of involvement is right now.”

HFC insiders told the outlet that Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) are pushing Republicans to contribute to the House Freedom Fund, which will then send the money to Perry’s race.

The Congressional Leadership Fund, much maligned by conservatives in recent years, may also be mobilized to assist Perry. The new Eighteen Fifty-four PAC is spending $2.3 million on TV ads to support the incumbent.

Perry is also unique in his refusal to change his views to win over centrists, insisting that he must stay true to his principles.

“I’m going to do the right thing every single time, regardless of where or who it came from,” he said. “That’s what I was elected to do … not the politically right thing, but the right thing.”

Democrats have intensified attacks on Perry based on his abortion stance, which Stelson claims is too radical.
