Gas prices: More decreases at the pumps to begin the work week

Gas prices continued to fall nationwide on Sunday heading into the work week. According to AAA, the national average for regular gas dropped to $3.173 per gallon. This is the lowest average cost for a gallon of regular gas since January 2024, which was $3.075.

The cost of gas remains a vital topic heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, has to indicate how she will address the country’s gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

Despite the recent trend of decreases, gas prices have fluctuated throughout the year and vary significantly among states. Furthermore, gas prices remain higher today than when Trump was in office. Virginia

The price of gas has increased recently in Virginia, as drivers are now paying more than $3 per gallon for regular gas. Late last week, Virginia had a price of $2.988 per gallon. Sunday’s price was more expensive than a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas only cost people in Virginia $3.01. It is, however, less than a month ago when a gallon of regular gas in the state was $3.162.

Maryland

The gas price in Maryland has also increased lately, with Sunday’s price rising to $3.234 per gallon for regular gas. This was a slight increase from last Thursday’s cost of $3.228. Prices are slightly less expensive than a week ago, when drivers in Maryland paid $3.246 per gallon. Prices are also cheaper than a month ago, when a gallon of regular gas in Maryland cost $3.223.

Delaware

Gas prices also rose in Delaware on Sunday, with the new price for a gallon of regular gas costing $3.192. Not too long ago, the First State had the least expensive gas prices in the Delmarva region. However, increases over the last two weeks nullified that claim. Sunday’s price for gas was slightly increased from a week ago in Delaware, when gas cost $3.188 per gallon. It’s also more expensive now for gas in the state than a month ago when a gallon of regular gas was $3.146.

Washington, D.C.

Unlike the rest of the Delmarva region, gas prices in Washington, D.C., decreased on Sunday, albeit ever so slightly. The new price of regular gas in the nation’s capital was $3.296 per gallon. This was a small decrease from Saturday when gas cost $3.305. Prices are cheaper than a week ago, when gas was $3.312 per gallon. Over the last month, the cost of regular gas has dropped significantly, decreasing from $3.54 per gallon to Sunday’s price mentioned above.
