San Francisco unveiled a drag queen laureate Thursday in an attempt to improve the image of drag performers.

D’Arcy Drollinger is a drag queen and nightclub owner who also sings, acts, choreographs dances, and directs films. Now Drollinger will be given a stipend of $55,000 over 18 months of being an ambassador for the lifestyle, per the Associated Press.

“I’m honored, humbled, and thrilled to be named the first drag laureate. And in the fabulous city where I was born,” Drollinger wrote on Instagram. “San Francisco, she’s an icon! I am proud to live in a city that is pioneering the drag laureate position at this time. Here’s to building bridges, creating partnerships, all while elevating and celebrating the art of drag.”

Fifteen states have attempted to enact bans on drag performances. Even in California, the Los Angeles Dodgers opted against honoring a drag group that uses Catholic and Christian imagery in sexualized contexts on the team’s Pride Night, per a team announcement Wednesday.

As the city takes a stand on drag queens, San Francisco hosts roughly 38,000 homeless people every night, according to a 2022 report by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. That is a small fraction of the 30% of the nation’s homeless population currently living in California.
