Entrepreneur and GOP presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy said universal voting is not guaranteed, and civic duty is a “proper precondition for enjoying that privilege.

“One of the things that we don’t do a good enough job of in this country is teaching the next generation what the Constitution actually says,” Ramaswamy said while speaking to voters, according to a video posted to Twitter Friday.

“One of the things I favor, this is controversial to some people, if you want to be 18 years old, graduate from high school, and cast a ballot in this country at a young age, you better at least pass the civics portion of the test that immigrants have to pass to actually come to this country.”

Ramaswamy’s campaign announced the candidate supports a Constitutional amendment regarding “civic duty voting.”

The candidate has vocally supported raising the national voting age to 25 years old, according to a report.

Younger citizens, including 18-year-olds, would still be able to vote if they served at least six months in the armed forces or as a first responder or if they have passed the citizenship test required for immigrants to become naturalized citizens., the report noted.

“We’re gonna have to think big about how we revive,” Ramaswamy told voters in the video. “I no longer just point to the leadership’s failure to follow the Constitution. That’s important, that’ll be my job in Washington, D.C., to take on, but the real problem is we have to have a population and a culture in this country that’s committed to it in the first place.”

“If I have to choose between one or the other, the whole ball game is the second one, and that’s where my focus is … I’d be the youngest person ever elected to the U.S. presidency. If I’m elected, I take that as my chief responsibility to pass that on to the next generation.”
