House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) pledged to question FBI Director Christopher Wray over documents purporting to show a “criminal scheme” involving the Biden family.

Wray elicited outrage from Republicans when his agency announced on Wednesday that it would not comply with a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee. The subpoena was seeking a document that the committee claimed shows President Joe Biden and family members engaging in a “criminal scheme” with foreign nationals. McCarthy called the defiance of the subpoena “unacceptable” on Thursday, and he pledged to personally call Wray to demand answers.

“I’m gonna call Director Wray today because we have oversight of the FBI. We have the right,” McCarthy said in an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”

“[James] Comer is simply following information that he has found. We should find all the information.”

He went on to lay out the case against the Biden family, then argued that the FBI withholding information implied that they were covering for the president and his family.

“Why would you hold that information back? You’re protecting,” McCarthy said. “You’d want all in the open. And as a member of Congress, it doesn’t matter if this person is Republican or Democrat. We have oversight of the FBI. If the FBI at any time think they could withhold information from Congress, we have a severe problem on our hands.”

The house speaker’s announcement comes after House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) unveiled evidence obtained through subpoenas that “the Biden family, their business associates, and their companies received over $10 million” from companies belonging to foreign nationals.

Comer listed the names of nine Biden family members that he believes are implicated in the payments. The memo names Hunter Biden; James Biden; James Biden’s wife, Sara; Beau Biden’s widow and Hunter Biden’s ex-girlfriend, Hallie Biden; Hunter Biden’s ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle; Hunter Biden’s wife, Melissa Cohen; and three children of Joe Biden or of James Biden as having received payments.

The FBI refused to hand over a bureau form that Comer claims describes a “criminal scheme” involving then-Vice President Joe Biden and an unnamed “foreign national.” The agency argued that “as is clear from the name itself, confidentiality is definitional to the FBI’s Confidential Human Source program” and that “significant harm to investigative work — and to the program as a whole — could result from dissemination of FD-1023s or other similar documents.”
