Former Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) sharpened his attack against former President Donald Trump in a series of new Facebook ads.

The ads, which were rolled out ahead of Trump’s CNN town hall event at St. Anselm College, jab at the former president for being “afraid” of the GOP primary debates and allude to various scandals such as the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“As others can’t even mention Trump’s name and remain silent, Gov. Chris Christie is continuing to confront and challenge him,” a source close to Christie told the Washington Examiner.

Trump is poised to make his return to CNN, a network with which he has had an acrimonious relationship, Wednesday evening for a forum with voters.

Christie’s ads suggest questions for attendees to ask, such as why Trump is “afraid” to get on the debate stage and whether his alleged hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels, as well as others, was presidential conduct.

The ads hew closely to Christie’s public commentary bashing the former president, whom he befriended in the early 2000s while serving as United States attorney general for the District of New Jersey.

“I mean, he must be the unluckiest S.O.B. in the world. He just has, you know, random people he’s never met before who were able to convince a jury that he sexually abused them. I mean, this guy, it’s one person after another, one woman after another. The stories just continue to pile up,” Christie said during a recent Fox News radio interview.

Trump has actively toyed with the prospect of skipping one or both of the planned GOP debates, taking note of his commanding lead over the 2024 primary field in polls. Christie, who had a famous moment on the debate stage with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), bashed Trump publicly for musing about boycotting the debates.

Over recent weeks, Christie has traveled through New Hampshire, hosting town halls and other events to test the 2024 waters. He has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to run within the “next couple of weeks.”

Christie has foreshadowed that if he jumps into the 2024 arena, he will not shy away from taking on Trump directly.
