Colorado company’s ‘smart gun’ nearly sold out in preorders

A Colorado gun manufacturer announced Saturday that it has nearly sold out the second launch of its “smart gun.”
Biofire launched its smart gun complete with a “Guardian Biometric Engine” that unlocks upon fingerprint identification and 3D facial recognition on Apr 13 and only had 2% of preorders left less than a month later. The gun in its latest edition will officially be on the market in 2024. A “Founders Edition” of the firearm has already sold out and will ship late this year.
While the gun allows for its owners to add authorized users to it via its Smart Dock, it was designed to lock “the moment it leaves your hand,” according to the website in order “to prevent misuse when you set it down or if someone takes it from you.” Its technology can recognize its user no matter if he or she is wearing a mask or gloves, or even has dirty fingers.

Currently the gun is only available as a 9mm Luger with 10 or 15 round double-stack magazines. Its material is mostly made of stainless steel, which puts the gun’s weight at just under two and a half pounds.
Biofire Technologies founder and CEO Kai Kloepfer told reporters that he began experimenting with the technology 11 years ago in light of the Aurora Theater shooting, when three people were wounded and 12 were killed.

Colorado is a state with over 149,000 gun licenses in 2021 alone according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Pistols were the number one type of firearm sold out of Colorado, as were 9mm caliber guns.
From 2017-2021, over 26,000 gun crimes were tied to sales from the state, making it the number one seller of guns recovered by law enforcement.
