Florida is set to execute a prisoner who brutally stabbed a woman to death in 1986 months after he was released from prison, where he was sentenced for rape.

Darryl Barwick will be executed at Florida State Prison in Starke at 6 p.m., according to a report.

The 56-year-old was convicted in the gruesome murder of Rebecca Wendt, whom Barwick stabbed to death on March 31, 1996, in her Panama City apartment.

Barwick plead guilty to killing the 24-year-old after he had watched her sunbathe, the report noted.

He had followed Wendt back to her residence with the intention of robbing her, but when she fought back, Barwick stabbed her at least 37 times.

When authorities arrived on the scene, the victim’s bathing suit appeared as if it had been tried to be removed, but no evidence of sexual assault was present.

Medical examiners, however, did report they discovered semen on a blanket where her corpse was found.

Barwick was connected to the case via his confession, footprints outside the residence, the semen stain, and a witness who watched him approach the apartment, the report noted.

He was convicted of first-degree murder, armed burglary, attempted sexual battery, and armed robbery that November and sentenced to death two months later.

Wendt’s murder came about fewer than three months after Barwick had been released from prison, where he had served time for raping a 21-year-old woman at knifepoint.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed Barwick’s death warrant in April.
