LA Times columnist thinks minorities have been brainwashed into opposing affirmative action

Affirmative action is so unpopular, even among minorities, that the only conclusion liberals can come to is that everyone has been brainwashed against it.

That is what Jean Guerrero argues in her recent Los Angeles Times column. Guerrero claims that “Republican activists” have claimed “they want to eliminate racism and create a colorblind society” for decades. “Their propaganda is so persuasive that 73% of Americans, including most people of color, believe race or ethnicity should not be a factor in college admissions,” Guerrero writes.

Yes, that is a real sentence written in the Los Angeles Times. Guerrero bemoans that “most people of color” aren’t enlightened like she is, and instead are brainwashed idiots who can’t think for themselves.

Guerrero then desperately tries to tar all opposition to affirmative action by making tenuous connections between fringe neo-Nazis and the lawsuits against universities that have brought the issue to the Supreme Court. She even ties Larry Elder, the radio host turned 2021 California gubernatorial candidate, to white supremacy (Elder is black). But all of this is just a convoluted attempt to cover Guerrero’s main opinion: minorities can’t think for themselves, and they only oppose affirmative action because of propaganda.

Most recently, a Washington Post poll found that 65% of Asians and Pacific Islanders, 60% of Hispanics, and 47% of black adults all support the Supreme Court banning universities from taking race into account during the admission process. Overall, 63% of adults support than ban, with just 36% wanting the court to continue to allow universities to racially discriminate against applicants.

Of course, that is only because everyone has been brainwashed into becoming soldiers of white supremacy, according to Guerrero. The goal of ending affirmative action is “white supremacy,” she tells us, because if there is one thing white supremacists really want, it is … more Asians getting into Ivy League universities?

Safe to say that this conspiracy theory needs more work.

This is just another entry in lazy liberal politics, where a pundit or politician assumes that everyone would just agree with them about everything if not for propaganda or “misinformation.” It is impossible that liberal policies like affirmative action can be opposed by most people, especially “most people of color.” Guerrero wants to erase their agency to justify her worldview, even if that means arguing that almost everyone who disagrees with her is a puppet for white supremacy.
