E JEAN CARROLL’S RAPE DEFAMATION TRIAL AGAINST TRUMP STARTS IN MANHATTAN TUESDAY

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday for the case in which Trump will defend against Carroll’s accusations that he defamed her and her allegations that she was raped by him in a Bergdorf fitting room in the mid-1990s. Trump, who has denied wrongdoing, is not expected to be in court on Tuesday.

The former Elle magazine columnist is suing Trump for defamation after he repeated his denial of her claims on his Truth Social media platform after leaving the White House.

Carroll was able to elevate her civil defamation lawsuit into a more severe battery lawsuit after New York passed a law in November allowing alleged victims to file civil suits after the statute of limitations expired.

Protesters outside the court held signs saying “Lies have consequences” and “Trump is a rapist.”

Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is overseeing the nontelevised trial, asked that attendees of the in-person hearing “please refrain from making any statements that are likely to incite violence and civil unrest.”
