The Club for Growth, a leading anti-tax conservative group, said former President Donald Trump mirrors President Joe Biden’s policies and rhetoric on Social Security.

“Joe Biden and Donald Trump have the same plan for Social Security: Cut 20 percent or more,” the group declared in a recent newspaper ad.

Both programs are careening toward insolvency, according to multiple projections. The Club for Growth cited a study indicating that if Congress fails to reform the programs, they will be unable to provide full payments to recipients, which could trigger automatic cuts of about 23%.

Trump has drawn battle lines with his primary foes on the matter, declaring back in January that under no circumstances should the GOP “cut a single penny from Medicare or Social Security.” On occasion, he has also taken aim at his top speculated rival, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), accusing him of wanting to slash funding.

“Social Security and Medicare, and Ron’s attack on both, have destroyed DeSanctimonious. His love affair with Jeb Bush and Karl Rove, certainly haven’t helped, but being a DISCIPLE of ‘Wheelchair over the Cliff’ Paul Ryan, has been a disaster. Ron has lost his supporters and his support, and MAGA refuses to Endorse disloyal people!” the former president wrote on Truth Social.

During his tenure in Congress, DeSantis backed several Republican measures to reform entitlements, including raising the retirement age and tweaking Social Security’s cost of living increases. More recently, the Florida governor has insisted that “we’re not going to mess with Social Security as Republicans,” but Trump’s attacks have persisted.

Biden has similarly latched on to Social Security as a top issue ahead of the 2024 cycle. He previously chided the GOP during his State of the Union address, warning that he would stop efforts to cut funding to the programs.

Trump has been no stranger to tiffs with the Club for Growth. Earlier this year, the group seemingly snubbed Trump by declining to invite him to a donor retreat, drawing his fury. The former president has occasionally blasted the group, as has his son, Donald Trump Jr.

David McIntosh, the Club for Growth’s president, previously told the Washington Examiner he was “convinced that our weakest candidate for winning the White House is Donald Trump.”
