Majority of Americans disapprove of Biden or Trump running in 2024: Poll

A vast majority of Americans are displeased by their 2024 options as President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump head toward a potential general election rematch, according to a new poll.
Roughly 70% of all voters believe that Biden shouldn’t seek another term in office, including 51% of Democrats; while some 60% of Americans, as well as almost a third of Republicans, believe Trump shouldn’t vie for another term in 2024, an NBC poll found.

“It’s about 19 months before there’s an election; most people make their decision on the candidate 19 days before the election,” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) told NBC’s Meet the Press in response to the poll.
The poll comes amid murmurs that Biden could launch his reelection bid as early as Tuesday. Biden enjoys higher favorables than Trump, but voters appear troubled by his age. At 80 years old, Biden is already the oldest president in United States history. He would be 82 at the start of a potential second term and 86 by its conclusion.
Half of the voters surveyed who didn’t want Biden to run again cited his age as a “major” factor. Trump is currently 76 years old. Still, Biden appears to be a tad more popular than his predecessor, with 38% offering a favorable view of him and 48% negative, while Trump sits at 34% positive and 53% negative.
Biden’s job approval rating is slightly higher than his favorable, with 41% approving of his performance, compared to 54% who disapprove, marking a decline from his 45% to 50% approval to disapproval rating from January.
Despite their seemingly apathetic view of Biden, 88% of Democrats, 22% of independents, and 3% of Republicans prefer him over the eventual GOP nominee, per the poll.
The poll reaffirmed Trump’s status as the leading contender in the GOP primary field, clinching 46% Republican support, while the next highest candidate, Gov. Ron DeSantis, nabbed 31%.
Trump recently rankled anti-abortion groups after a campaign spokesperson emphasized the need to adjudicate abortion policy at the state level, raising concerns he would not pursue federal restrictions on the controversial procedure.
Late last month, Trump’s 2024 bid was rocked by his indictment out of Manhattan over an alleged “catch and kill” he and his associates allegedly deployed to quash damaging stories against him during the 2016 election cycle. Trump pleaded not guilty to a 34-count indictment in the case and has denied wrongdoing.
Republicans appear unshaken by the development, which appeared to fuel a campaign bonanza for Trump. Over two-thirds of GOP voters shrug off questions about his electability amid that bombshell development, per the poll.

Other polls have pegged a similarly cold reception among voters to the prospect of a 2020 Trump versus Biden general election redo.
The NBC poll was taken between April 14 to 18 among 1,000 adults and had a margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points. Its Republican subset featured 292 voters and a margin of error of plus-minus 5.99 percentage points.
