How did President Joe Biden put it exactly? He said something like, “Don’t tell me what you value. Show me your budget, and I’ll tell you what you value.”
Well, as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) faces a huge budget deficit, we are seeing exactly what he values — and doesn’t value.
IT SHOULDN’T TAKE 25 YEARS TO BUILD A POWER LINE
Just a week after announcing he was stockpiling 250,000 abortion pills, Newsom released a budget that took $40 million from children in California’s foster care system.
California’s Court Appointed Special Advocates program funds meetings that help foster children navigate California’s complicated child welfare system. Under a previous Newsom budget, the program was set to receive $60 million. Under Newsom’s new budget proposal, the program is only getting $20 million.
“This is unfortunate,” Emeryville councilman Kalimah Priforce tweeted. “If a program like this existed when my brother aged out of the foster care system, he would still be alive. #FosterCare #GroupHome #Orphans.”
Newsom bought the abortion pills in response to a federal judge’s recent order halting the sale of mifepristone earlier this month. That order has since been narrowed by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, and a 9th Circuit Court judge has ruled it does not apply to California at all. The Supreme Court will issue a ruling on the original order sometime on Friday.
Even then, Newsom wasn’t even bright enough to stock up on mifepristone. He instead bought misoprostol, a separate abortion drug usually used in conjunction with mifepristone, although it can be used on its own as well. Misoprostol’s FDA approval has not been challenged in court. It is unclear how stocking up on misoprostol would help anyone who wants to use mifepristone, but Newsom explained to NPR that he bought all that misoprostol “to ensure that California remains a safe haven for safe, affordable, and accessible reproductive care.”
If only Newsom was as committed to protecting California’s foster children as he is to protecting the ability of mothers to abort their babies.
