Chip Roy says Democrats can ‘choke’ on ‘responsible’ GOP debt plan

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) said that Democrats will have to “choke” on Republicans’ budget plan if they don’t come to the table to negotiate “in good faith.”
In an interview with Fox News, Roy expressed confidence in House Republicans’ efforts to put together a solid budget plan, though they’d need to work through some things first. Roy attacked Democrats over a lack of negotiations with Republicans.

Republicans have been “trying to work in good faith. But if Democrats aren’t going to sit down with us, then, you know, we’re going to send something over that’s responsible, and they can choke on it,” Roy said.
“We’re talking about demanding debt ceiling changes. Why is that? Because it allows us to spend at 2023 defense levels, which was just agreed upon in the old, frankly bloated bipartisan omnibus bill. But it allows us to still spend at just before pre-COVID levels, which happens to be dollar-for-dollar in line with what 2024 levels were under President Obama’s last budget,” he continued. “My main point is there’s hardly anything radical about what we’re suggesting by returning to what we were literally spending four months ago, at ’22 levels.”
Roy gave a mostly positive response to McCarthy’s budget proposal, contrasting with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who roundly rejected any suggestion of getting on board with McCarthy’s plan in its current form. Roy added, however, that there needed to be more spending cuts if he were to get on board with the plan.
And aside from spending cuts, Roy said his biggest concern was with green subsidies the Democrats had previously pushed through.

“We have got to get the absurd subsidies that were put in place that would supercharge all the dollars for renewables, which are really, frankly, not reliable, which is really subsidizing China and undermining our growth — to be able to have a strong economy here based on our strength, which is exporting liquefied natural gas and all stuff that’s still good for the overall environment and climate,” Roy said.
“And we just supercharged the exact opposite,” he added. “While you’ve got a war going on, you know, you’re basically helping Putin, helping China. You’re helping everybody but American economic growth.”
