Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, suggested that sexism and ageism are behind calls for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to resign after a long absence caused by shingles.

“Here’s the thing: The Democrats would never have done this to a man,” Blackburn said in an interview with the Washington Examiner on Tuesday. “Maybe it’s age discrimination, maybe it’s sex discrimination, but I think that this is something that does not serve Democrats well in the long run.”

RO KHANNA CALLS ON DIANNE FEINSTEIN TO RESIGN OVER PROLONGED ABSENCE FROM SENATE

Blackburn was one of the first Republicans to come out in opposition to temporarily replacing Feinstein on the panel, which will likely fail without at least 60 votes to bypass a filibuster.

“I will not go along with Chuck Schumer’s plan to replace Senator Feinstein on the Judiciary Committee and pack the court with activist judges,” Blackburn tweeted on Monday. “Joe Biden wants the Senate to rubber stamp his unqualified and controversial judges to radically transform America.”

Several Democrats have expressed concern that Feinstein’s absence is delaying the confirmation of President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees and jeopardizing the party’s agenda since they have such a small majority. Last week, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) joined a growing chorus of Democrats calling on the California Democrat to resign over her extended absence from the Senate.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) appeared to imply that sexism may be playing a role in calls for Feinstein to resign last week.

“She deserves the respect to get well and be back on duty, and it’s interesting to me. I don’t know what political agendas are at work that are going after Sen. Feinstein in that way. I’ve never seen them go after a man who was sick in the Senate in that way,” Pelosi said last Wednesday.
