WATCH: Education Secretary Miguel Cardona refuses to answer ‘What is a woman?’

Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona repeatedly refused to offer a definition of a woman during an Appropriations Committee hearing on the Department of Education’s budget Tuesday.
During the hearing, the first time Cardona testified before the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) asked the secretary to define what a woman is.

“Our focus at the department is to provide equal access to students, including students who are LGBTQ, access free from discrimination,” Cardona said.

Unsatisfied, Clyde again asked Cardona, “What’s the definition of a woman?” and noted that the secretary did not answer the question the first time.

“I think that’s almost secondary to the important role that I have as secretary of education,” Cardona replied, again refusing to answer the question.
Clyde asked the question a third time, to which Cardona replied, “My job is to make sure that all students have access to public education.”

The secretary’s refusal to provide a definition of a woman is one of several high-profile incidents of Democratic or liberal leaders and politicians refusing to provide a definition of the word “woman.”
Last year, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) asked then-Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson if she could provide a definition of a woman, to which the judge said she could not in an exchange that went viral. Jackson was ultimately confirmed to the Supreme Court.
