Criminal justice reformers do not believe criminals should face consequences

The sorry state of New York City is that of a city run by overly empathetic naifs who have deluded themselves into thinking that criminals are just victims of societal circumstances. The result is the social decay of the city itself.
It has been determined that 327 people were responsible for nearly a third of shoplifting arrests in New York City last year. Those 327 people were arrested over 6,000 times collectively, averaging out to 18 arrests per thief over the course of 12 months. They have been given a free pass to steal whatever they like, whenever they like, with no consequences from the “justice system.”

Why? Because “criminal justice reform advocates have said that petty thefts are a crime of necessity, and that many down-on-their-luck New Yorkers are stealing what they need to survive in one of the world’s most expensive cities,” according to the New York Times. And so, the end result of criminal justice reform is that all businesses now become charities, criminals are allowed to do what they like, and everyone else just needs to deal with it.
These stores then close, and chain businesses shut down local locations. Take Walmart, which has shuttered four locations in Chicago after their losses doubled during the city’s crime surge. When those stores close, vulnerable communities lose out on job opportunities and consumer choices. Of course, the criminal justice reformers then come out and blame the businesses for not being OK with letting people steal from them every day with no consequences.

This is the natural result of criminal justice reform, which is promoted by people who believe that criminals are not responsible for their actions. According to these reformers, criminals are only criminals because of our evil society, so they cannot be expected to be held accountable for being serial shoplifters or committing homicides or being in gangs. Their ideal criminal justice system does not exist because they do not think crimes should be punished.
This is what “criminal justice reform” is, and this is what the Democrats who run cities including Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles believe. They do not think that criminals are doing anything wrong, only that they are misunderstood by society. Therefore, crime-ridden communities will continue to be hollowed out on behalf of those poor criminals, keeping those communities languishing in poverty with fewer businesses and fewer jobs for people who need them most.
