The deadline to file taxes is rapidly approaching, as most citizens only have one day to submit their income tax forms or request an extension.

Tax day this year falls on Tuesday, April 18, and those required to file taxes must submit paperwork to the IRS by that day to avoid penalties.

Those required to file taxes generally include people who made at least $12,950 for single filers and $25,900 for married filing jointly, per the IRS, but it may vary based on the situation. The IRS also said those who are not required to file a return might want to do so to get a refund on overpaid taxes, which requires a filing with the IRS to receive.

Tax day also serves as the deadline for the first quarter estimated tax payments for the tax year of 2023.

“Income taxes are a pay-as-you-go process. This means, by law, taxes must be paid as income is earned or received during the year. Most people pay their taxes through withholding from paychecks, pension payments, Social Security benefits or certain other government payments including unemployment compensation,” the IRS said about the deadline on its website.

This deadline applies to those who do not have taxes withheld from their paycheck throughout the year or those who do not have enough withheld from the paycheck to satisfy their required share of income taxes.

The IRS said some taxpayers in California, Georgia, and Alabama are eligible for an extension on this deadline due to disasters in those states. The deadline for the second and third quarter estimates are June 15 and Sept. 15, respectively.

Tax day typically falls on April 15, but due to April 15 falling on a Saturday, the deadline was pushed to April 18.

This year marks the fourth year that tax day has not fallen on April 15. In 2022 and 2023, the date was different due to April 15 being on a weekend, but in 2020, the deadline was pushed to July 15 due to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and in 2021, it was pushed to May 17 due to tax code changes from government relief packages for COVID-19.
