A Change.org petition is calling on airlines to allow overweight passengers to get free additional seats.

“Plus-sized” blogger and content creator Jae’lynn Chaney posted the petition to push the Federal Aviation Administration to require airlines to help large passengers.

As of Saturday morning, the petition had more than 4,000 signatures.

“Air travel should be comfortable and accessible for everyone, regardless of size. As plus-size travelers, my partner and I have unfortunately experienced discrimination and discomfort while flying,” Chaney wrote in her petition.

Chaney described a flight to Denver when she received “discrimination,” “hateful comments,” and “disapproving looks.” She went on to describe another flight that “forced” her to occupy “only one seat” and the armrests that caused her “pain and bruises.”

“This mistreatment of plus-size passengers is unacceptable, and it highlights the urgent need for better policies that protect the dignity and rights of all passengers, regardless of size. Unfortunately, plus-size passengers often experience discomfort and discrimination when flying,” she said.

Chaney added, “The FAA must require all airlines to implement a clear customer-of-size policy that prioritizes the comfort and well-being of all passengers. This policy should include clear guidelines on accommodating larger passengers, such as providing larger seats, seat belt extenders, and alternative seating arrangements.”

She had additional accommodations in her petition to provide “additional airport assistance to plus-size travelers if necessary, including wheelchair assistance and priority boarding.”

“The mistreatment and discrimination of plus-size travelers during Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screenings is another major issue that must be addressed,” she said.
