The White House said Friday that Republican congressional investigations of Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings were “on brand” and a violation of their midterm election campaign promises.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Republicans ran in the midterms on combating inflation, not investigating President Joe Biden’s son.

“Congressional Republicans ran saying that they were going to fight inflation, they said that they were going to make that a priority, they were very clear about that these past several months,” she said. “Instead what they are doing is they’re focusing… they’re making their top priority, they get the majority and their top priority is actually not focusing on the American families but focusing on the president’s family.”

Jean-Pierre gave this answer in response to a question about whether the president was involved in any of his son or brother’s foreign business dealings, a matter that will be investigated by the Republican-led House Oversight Committee in the next Congress.

“They’re not coming up with solutions on how we’re going to lower costs for American families, they’re not coming up with solutions as how we’re dealing with issues that matter most to American families,” Biden’s press secretary said.

Hunter Biden’s business activities are under federal investigation and there were reports in the weeks before the elections that he could face tax and gun charges.

At a minimum, the younger Biden’s dealings create the appearance of trading on his father’s name to earn money from foreign countries.

The president has repeatedly denied any involvement and defended his son. The White House normally declines to answer questions about Hunter Biden or refers them to the Justice Department.

Republicans won control of the House in the midterm elections, expanding their ability to conduct investigations of the Biden administration and related matters.

The contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop became a major issue in the closing weeks of the 2020 presidential election. The computer was widely dismissed as Russian disinformation and news stories about information on it were suppressed by major social media platforms, but the laptop was later authenticated.

A Democratic-led investigation of former President Donald Trump and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot is ongoing, with prime time hearings scheduled before this year’s elections.

There has nevertheless been some disagreement among Republican lawmakers over how much to focus on investigations rather than other issues now that they will have the majority.

Jean-Pierre also faced numerous questions about the Justice Department’s appointment of a special counsel to weigh charges against Trump, which she mostly referred to the DOJ.
