Why attack on her husband made Nancy Pelosi think twice about stepping down

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the attack on her husband almost made her reconsider leaving her leadership position.
Speaking with reporters on Friday, Pelosi said that the attack had the opposite effect that most would expect; rather than speeding up her decision to leave her senior post, she said that it gave her an incentive to stay, ABC News reported.

“No, it had the opposite effect,” she said, referring to the attack. “I couldn’t give them that satisfaction.”
“If anything it made me think about staying,” she said.
She went on to say that she had practically made up her mind about leaving a while ago, so though the attack almost convinced her to stay, her previous reasoning won out.
“I quite frankly, personally, have been ready to leave for a while,” she said. “Because there are things I want to do. I like to dance, I like to sing. There’s a life out there, right?”
Pelosi also said that she has survivor’s guilt over the attack because the assailant was looking for her, not her husband.
“If he had fallen, slipped on the ice, or was in an accident and hurt his head, it would be horrible, but to have it be an assault on him because they were looking for me is really — they call it ‘survivor’s guilt’ or something,” she said.

Pelosi announced in a floor speech on Thursday that she would not seek reelection for her position as head of the House Democrats. She will continue serving in the House as a representative, however.
