Don Lemon made a comment on Monday about comedian Jon Stewart that some are speculating wasn’t meant for viewers to hear.

“He gets a lot of leeway with the comedian thing, though,” Lemon can be heard saying while CNN This Morning’s screen displayed images of Stewart and U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks.

The show had just finished airing a segment of Stewart’s recent interview with Hicks wherein he claimed there is “f***ing corruption” in the Pentagon. As the audio from the interview faded, Lemon’s statement could be heard, followed by an extended silence before he began speaking again.

When the hosts returned to the screen, Lemon said, “We were just discussing that Jon Stewart is so much more than a comedian. He is a thought leader.”

“Yeah, when I was saying comedian and television host, he’s so much more than that,” the host explained. “I don’t even know if you need to qualify Jon Stewart as that. But good interview there.”

Last week, Stewart grilled the second-highest official at the department, telling her, “I can’t figure out how $850 billion to a department means that the rank and file still have to be on food stamps. To me, that’s f***ing corruption.”

Lemon was recently the subject of an expose article in which he was accused of “diva-like” behavior, sending threatening text messages, and other misconduct.

However, his spokesperson said, “The story, which is riddled with patently false anecdotes and no concrete evidence, is entirely based on unsourced, unsubstantiated, 15-year-old anonymous gossip. It’s amazing and disappointing that Variety would be so reckless.”
