Zeldin ‘seriously considering’ bid for RNC chair: ‘Time for our party to retool’

Former New York gubernatorial contender and outgoing GOP Rep. Lee Zeldin is leaning closer toward a bid for chair of the Republican National Committee.
“I am very seriously considering your requests and am grateful for your messages,” Zeldin said in a letter sent to RNC committee members Thursday afternoon. “It is time for our party to retool, transform, win back the Presidency in 2024, expand our number of Republican-held seats in Congress, and elect the maximum number of down-ballot races across the country.”

Should Zeldin run for the position, he would challenge incumbent RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, who is seeking her fourth two-year term.
Zeldin is fresh off a shockingly tight race against Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, which saw him lose despite earning at least 2.66 million votes to make for the best total-vote performance of any GOP candidate in more than 50 years.
Looking ahead, Zeldin contended that the Republican Party must “do everything in its power to save America.”
“The Democratic Party seems to be all in to do whatever they need to do to save themselves, wrecking the country and imposing their radical ideology on us all,” Zeldin said, noting he is willing to do his part toward creating a fresh GOP vision. “This means making sure people know what we stand for, and not just what we are against.”

The RNC chair election will take place during the committee’s winter meeting in January.
Zeldin conceded his election bid for New York governor last week, celebrating the congressional victories for the GOP in his state, which included winning 10 House races.
