Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) called for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to be impeached following reports that he accepted “luxury trips” from a Republican donor for over 20 years.

Ocasio-Cortez’s comments come after a ProPublica investigation discovered Thomas was “treated to luxury vacations” by millionaire Harlan Crow, a longtime Republican donor, including private jet and yacht travel, as well as stays at a private resort.

“This is beyond party or partisanship. This degree of corruption is shocking — almost cartoonish. Thomas must be impeached,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

The investigation detailed Thomas’s luxury trips to New Zealand, Indonesia, California, Texas, and Georgia. He did not disclose the travel according to his financial filings with the Supreme Court, ProPublica said.

Ocasio-Cortez foreshadowed that similar situations could happen within the court if Congress does not take action. Senate Democrats are in conversations over using this year’s funding legislation for the Supreme Court to push judges to adopt an ethics code that would require more transparent processes for recusals and for the investigation of ethics-related violation allegations.

“Barring some dramatic change, this is what the Roberts court will be known for: rank corruption, erosion of democracy, and the stripping of human rights,” the New York Democrat said.

Other lawmakers are speaking out about the investigation’s findings. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) vowed that the Senate Judiciary Committee, which he leads, will take action in response to the report.

“The highest court in the land shouldn’t have the lowest ethical standards,” Durbin said on Thursday. “The behavior is simply inconsistent with the ethical standards the American people expect of any public servant, let alone a Justice on the Supreme Court.”
