The arrest and arraignment of former President Donald Trump on the Tuesday of Holy Week have drawn a number of comparisons to the Passion of Jesus Christ, despite a number of Christians warning against making such comparisons.

The comparisons began last month when news leaked that a New York grand jury indictment of Trump for allegedly falsifying business records was imminent. But with the former president surrendering to authorities for his arraignment on the Tuesday of Holy Week —when Christians commemorate the events of the Passion of Jesus Christ — the comparisons reached a fever pitch.

DONALD TRUMP ARREST: TIMELINE OF TRUMP’S INDICTMENT INVOLVING HUSH MONEY PAYMENTS

Joseph McBride, a prominent Trump-supporting lawyer, tweeted last month that “as Christ was crucified, and then rose again on the 3rd day, so too will Donald Trump” after noting that the president would be arrested prior to Easter during the season of Lent.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), an avowed Trump supporter, said that Trump was “joining some of the most incredible people in history [by] being arrested.”

“Nelson Mandela was arrested, served time in prison,” she said. “Jesus! Jesus was arrested and murdered.”

But a number of prominent Christians warned against making the comparison of Trump’s arrest to the messianic nature of Christ’s Passion and implored Trump supporters to stop.

Terry Schilling, the president of the American Principles Project, a conservative advocacy group, said Trump would be better compared to comic book superheroes such as Batman rather than Jesus Christ.

“The comparison of any human being — even Donald Trump, to Jesus Christ is absurd,” Schilling said. “We all fall short of the glory of Christ. Donald Trump would be better compared against Batman or Iron Man, but Jesus Christ was brutally murdered for our sins so that we all might have eternal life, something far more valuable than our ability to earn a living and exercise our constitutional rights. Even Donald Trump acknowledges that he doesn’t compare to Jesus Christ, also known as God.”

Eric Sammons, the executive editor of Crisis Publications, tweeted that Trump supporters should stop making the comparison as well.

“To Trump supporters comparing Trump’s arrest the week before Easter to Christ’s arrest the week before Easter,” Sammons said, “Please stop. Just stop. For the love of God, stop!”
