Boeing donates to youth social justice conference with courses on ‘oppression’

Aerospace company Boeing gave a donation to Youth Celebrate Diversity, an organization dedicated to training student activists.
Boeing referred to the YCD as “a conference for high school students to connect on current issues, including racial inequity and social justice,” when it announced its $20,000 contribution. The Denver-based organization is a previous recipient of the Colorado Governor’s Service Award for Outstanding Nonprofit Organization and the Inclusiveness@Work Nonprofit Award.
Among the conference’s workshops are “Allyship 101,” “Student Activism 101,” and “Queer in a Small Town,” which include foundational concepts such as identity, diversity, privilege, marginalization and oppression, and intersectionality, among others.
The website describing the courses’ concepts includes an “oppression matrix,” which breaks down who is privileged, who is oppressed, and who is considered to be on the border. One session that explores microaggressions and unconscious biases is titled “Am I Casually Oppressing My Peers?”

YCD goes on to encourage student participants to organize “a Strong Inclusion and Justice Club at Your School.” It also has a sister program called Teaching for Equity and Social Justice, which encourages a similar tactic. The organization’s hope is that eventually, “every teen in America will feel safe, respected, and empowered to achieve their potential.”
