House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is taking the stage at noon on Thursday to discuss her future just one day after the Republicans secured a slim House majority in the 2022 midterm elections.

Pelosi’s decision on whether she’ll launch another leadership bid, step down from leadership, or exit politics altogether has been widely anticipated for months.

The speaker won her first election to Congress in 1987 and has served as the party’s House leader since 2002, becoming the House’s most prolific fundraiser and a well-recognized face throughout the United States.

She recently won reelection to the House in the midterm elections with 83.9% of the vote, defeating Republican challenger John Dennis. Her win followed a violent attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi, after David Depape broke into their California home looking for the speaker herself and struck him on the head with a hammer.

Democrats know replacing her will not be an easy task, as the party has been quietly discussing for months who would be the best successor. Those entering the fray include Reps. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Katherine Clark (D-MA), Pete Aguilar (D-CA), and Steny Hoyer (D-MD).
