For years, liberals, Democrats, and other leftists have called for more laws to deal with the country’s gun violence problems. They have claimed that stricter laws would lead to fewer deaths in horrible tragedies such as school shootings. On the flip side, conservatives, Republicans, and others on the Right have pointed out that it’s not the gun that kills people — it is the shooter. They also argued that plenty of existing laws are going unenforced, such that violators are left free to commit further crimes with guns, which are often acquired illegally anyway.

Less than a year ago, in June 2022, President Joe Biden signed a bill into law that focused on gun safety. It was celebrated by liberals, Democrats, and leftists everywhere. They said it didn’t include everything they wanted, but that it was a step in the right direction and it would save many lives and help prevent tragedies such as school shootings.

The bill focused on mental health and school safety and incentivized states to support red flag laws. It was the first gun control law from Congress in nearly 30 years. It was the Democrat-controlled federal government’s response after mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York. Democrats assured it would improve security and save lives. They were wrong.

“While this bill doesn’t do everything I want, it does include actions I’ve long called for that are going to save lives. Today, we say more than enough. We say more than enough. At a time when it seems impossible to get anything done in Washington, we are doing something consequential,” the president said at the time.

Yet, nearly a year later, and after the school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, this week, it seems pretty clear that Biden’s new law has accomplished little, if anything, in terms of gun safety.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) also overvalued the legislation. Murphy led the negotiations between Republicans and Democrats on the law and touted the bipartisan “achievement,” NPR reported at the time.

“It doesn’t do everything I want,” Murphy said. “But what we are doing will save thousands of lives without violating anyone’s Second Amendment rights.”

So Biden and a high-ranking member of the Senate promised that the new bill would save lives. There is no evidence that it accomplished anything. Gun violence and homicides remain rampant throughout the country, and, as the Nashville shooting showed, schools remain in danger.

Naturally, the Left will take this to mean we need more laws. Yet after their statements of false security proved untrue, it shows that what Democrats have said regarding gun safety cannot be trusted.
