New York medical school touts anti-racist curriculum to earn high marks for diversity

EXCLUSIVE — The medical school at the University of Buffalo earned high marks for its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion from the Association of American Medical Colleges and has incorporated aspects of critical race theory into its curriculum.

The University of Buffalo’s Jacobs School of Medicine’s responses to the AAMC’s diversity, inclusion, culture, and equity survey were obtained by the medical watchdog group Do No Harm and were shared exclusively with the Washington Examiner.

The replies to the survey show the school achieved a score of 90%, indicating “substantial diversity, inclusion, culture, and equity efforts.”

The medical school affirmed that it ensured a “diverse” student body by implementing a “holistic admissions policy,” lobbied in favor of DEI at the local, state, and national government levels, and committed to incorporating equity initiatives in its curriculum.

In a blog post last year, the medical school announced it was overhauling its medical school curriculum to incorporate anti-racism, a term commonly associated with critical race theory. The school said the change came as a result of a student petition.

“It is well-documented that having more diversity among instructors benefits all students and faculty, and that mentoring is key, a premise taken for granted throughout the medical profession,” the blog post says.

The University of Buffalo did not respond to a request for comment.

In a statement to the Washington Examiner, Do No Harm’s program manager, Laura Morgan, accused the school of “implementing woke policies” that prioritized political agendas over a good medical education.

“The University of Buffalo’s Jacobs School of Medicine is loud and proud about implementing woke policies, including elevating ‘anti-racism’ as a core principle of the curriculum,” Morgan said. “Jacobs’s administrators are putting identity politics over medical education, and their push for DEI above all else is seen throughout the school’s DICE Inventory responses. The Jacobs School of Medicine should return to producing good doctors instead of engaging in political indoctrination.”
