President Joe Biden‘s approval rating dipped slightly compared to last month, as voters believe he is slipping underwater in handling key areas such as the environment, energy policy, foreign affairs, and the economy.

A Gallup poll released on Tuesday showed Biden’s approval rating slip from 42% in February to 40% in March. His ratings in the four key areas have also slipped, with approval ratings in his handling of the environment sitting at 43%, 38% for energy and foreign policies, and 32% for the economy.

ONLY A QUARTER OF DEMOCRATS WANT BIDEN TO RUN IN 2024: POLL

Biden’s approval rating has hovered between the 40% to 42% range for the last six months, with his rating not exceeding 44% since August 2021. His ratings on the economy and foreign affairs, which are periodically surveyed by Gallup, were at the majority level only at the start of his term.

Ratings of environment and energy policy, which have only been surveyed by Gallup three times, are on par with initial ratings taken one year ago. However, they are lower than they were in August when Congress had passed — and Biden signed — the Inflation Reduction Act, which the Biden administration calls “the most significant climate legislation in U.S. history.”

Democrats’ approval of Biden’s job performance consistently remains high, sitting at 78% or higher. In March, 87% of Democrats approved of Biden’s performance, while Republicans’ approval dropped to new lows at 3%.

Independents’ views on the president’s administration have varied over the last several polls, with a high rating of 61% at the beginning of Biden’s presidency. However, since September 2021, independents’ ratings have been at or below 40%. In March, independents’ approval rating of Biden sits at 35%.

Gallup’s numbers come as a poll from Monmouth University released on Monday shows that one in four Democrats want Biden to run for president again in 2024. Of the 44% who hope Biden steps aside for another Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris emerged as the favorite to replace Biden, with 13% of the vote.

Other names included were Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), as well as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA).

The polls come as the 2024 race begins to heat up on the Republican side of the aisle. In the GOP primary, former President Donald Trump is shaping up to be the front-runner, so far only facing former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
