A female pastor in Texas made history when she became her Baptist church’s first senior pastor.

The Rev. Victoria Robb Powers of Royal Lane Baptist Church said, “God calls all types of people,” after she became the first woman in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to fill the role of senior pastor.

“Yeah, there was pushback,” Powers said.

“I mean, I grew up in a domination that said women couldn’t be pastors.”

Growing up a Southern Baptist, Powers had only ever seen men preach, she said.

Now, she is proud to serve that role herself.

“I love that I get to talk about the hope of life in the face of death,” Powers said. “I love that I get to proclaim that God welcomes all people. I love to lead a church that not only tolerates difference but also celebrates difference.”

The same week Powers was installed, the Southern Baptist Convention expelled one of its largest churches because it had a female pastor, according to a report.

“If God is going to call someone to ministry, I just have to believe nobody is going to stand in the way of that, you know?” Powers said.

The reverend hopes her story will inspire other women to walk a similar path.

“God calls all types of people, not just one kind of person,” according to Powers. “That’s my hope for this story. How many people will now learn women can do this, and do it well?”
