Democrats are lashing out at House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) for scrutinizing the Biden family’s business dealings, claiming he is running “political interference for Donald Trump and his family.”

Seizing on a recent New York Times profile of Comer, the Democratic National Committee argued that the report raised “serious concerns about his own credibility,” seemingly seeking to subdue criticisms of first son Hunter Biden’s overseas affairs.

“Not only has James Comer trafficked in conspiracy theories and engaged in political stunts to attack the president’s deceased son and his widow, but he has now admitted he’s using his committee to run political interference for Donald Trump and his family,” Elena Kuhn, a spokeswoman for the Democrats, told the Washington Examiner.

Buried in the profile was an apparent admission by Comer that scrutinizing former first son-in-law Jared Kushner’s overseas business dealings could be “politically unsustainable.”

“I don’t disagree with what you said,” Comer replied when asked about the pitfalls of investigating Kushner, the New York Times reported. The outlet did not provide the specific question he was asked.

“Comer’s constituents would be better served by a representative who spends less time launching politically motivated attacks and more time tackling the issues that actually matter,” Kuhn added.

Since assuming command over the powerful House Oversight Committee, Comer’s team has turned up the heat on Hunter Biden, subpoenaing bank records of his associates and pouring through a tranche of records about the Biden family’s business affairs.

He inherited an investigation the panel initiated under Democratic leadership in the summer of 2022 about how Kushner’s Affinity Partners investment firm garnered a $2 billion investment from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund shortly after the Trump administration concluded.

Comer dropped that inquiry shortly after taking over, per the report. He also halted an examination about whether former President Donald Trump improperly used his presidency to pad his wallet. The inquiry focused on how foreign governments spent money at Trump’s properties. Further investigation into Trump’s dealings is not something that interests Comer, according to the report.

Democrats have long cried foul over Comer’s itch to target the Bidens while leaving Trump’s family off the hook.

“If Chairman Comer is actually concerned about the ‘national security implications of a President’s or Vice President’s immediate family members receiving millions of dollars from foreign nationals,’ surely he will be a thousand times more interested in investigating the billions of dollars recently paid to Jared Kushner by the Saudi Government,” ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) chided recently.

Last month, Raskin requested Kushner produce documents previously sought by the committee in June of last year.

The Washington Examiner contacted a Comer spokesperson for comment.
