Meta to stop fact-checking Trump following 2024 announcement

Meta will no longer fact-check former President Donald Trump’s statements in light of his 2024 announcement.
While the former president is still banned from Facebook, the company reiterated its policy on not fact-checking Trump’s statements in light of his status as a political candidate in a memo acquired by CNN. Trump’s presidential announcement means that Facebook can no longer fact-check his claims about an assortment of topics, including the 2020 election.

The document noted the company’s policy and stated that “political speech is ineligible for fact-checking. This includes the words a politician says as well as photo, video, or other content that is clearly labeled as created by the politician or their campaign.”
The memo focused on Meta’s definition of a politician, which it described as “candidates running for office, current office holders — and, by extension, many of their cabinet appointees — along with political parties and their leaders.”

The former president is not allowed on the platform after Facebook banned him for involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, riots outside the Capitol. The platform only temporarily banned him. Trump could be allowed on to the platform prior to 2024 after his ban expires, according to Meta executive Nick Clegg.
Trump announced his 2024 presidential run on Tuesday.
