Lindsey Graham says Manhattan district attorney case against Trump is ‘without merit’

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is the latest Republican to condemn Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation that could result in the indictment of former President Donald Trump, saying the case is “without merit.”
“It’s going to blow up our country, and this is a bunch of BS,” Graham said Tuesday on Fox News. “The guy is yielding to the political pressure generated by the former prosecutor.”

“This is a case without merit,” he added.
Graham’s remarks come on the same day Trump had predicted he would be arrested in an announcement via Truth Social over the weekend. He decried “illegal leaks” and a “highly political” prosecutor preparing to take him into custody.
It is possible Trump may not be indicted on Tuesday, as some reports indicate the grand jury will not meet again until Wednesday.
Trump’s comments referred to Bragg’s investigation into hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016. Several reports indicate that Bragg is preparing to indict Trump on criminal charges.
Bragg’s case could make history, as it would be the first indictment of a former U.S. president. It could hinge on whether or not Trump falsified business records to list reimbursement payments that he made to his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, as legal expenses.
Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to paying Daniels $130,000 during the 2016 campaign to prevent her from going public about an alleged affair she had with the former president in 2005.
At the time of Cohen’s trial, federal prosecutors did not press charges against Trump due to guidance from the Justice Department that a sitting president cannot be charged with a crime. However, prosecutors restarted discussions about potential charges shortly before Trump left office in 2021.

Several other high-profile GOP lawmakers have dismissed Bragg’s case as a political vendetta. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) vowed he would open an investigation into Bragg’s office, calling the case an “outrageous abuse of power.”
“Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump,” McCarthy tweeted on Saturday.
