Embattled Rep. George Santos (R-NY) filed reelection paperwork on Tuesday despite calls from members on both sides of the aisle for him to step down following a litany of scandals.

Santos has come under fire for fabricating large portions of his background, including his education, work history, ethnicity, and financial information. He also faces allegations that he committed check fraud in Brazil and accusations of sexual harassment from a person interviewing in his office. Santos has vehemently denied the harassment allegation and accusations of illegal activity.

The filing comes on the heels of the Federal Election Commission saying Santos has to declare whether he intends to run after surpassing a post-election fundraising threshold.

While the paperwork has been filed, it is unclear whether the freshman will ultimately run again for his seat.

Santos, who is facing a House Ethics investigation and federal investigations, has faced strong pressure to step down, with GOP members of the New York delegation repeatedly calling for his resignation and some voicing concerns that they will be linked to his scandals in the next cycle.

The House Democrats’ campaign arm has already made the seat a focus for 2024, with the party seeing the swing district as a top target.

“New Yorkers have made it incredibly clear they have no interest in seeing George Santos serve in Congress much longer,” Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokeswoman Nebeyatt Betre said in a statement.
