Trump’s ‘very big announcement’ comes amid a different playing field post-midterm elections

Former President Donald Trump is expected to announce another bid for the White House on Tuesday evening, though the timing of the announcement comes as support for him is dwindling.
Trump’s expected announcement was originally supposed to come on Nov. 7, but he ultimately decided to postpone his announcement to Nov. 15 over fears from his advisers that a 2024 announcement on the eve of the midterm elections would push more Democratic voters to the polls. However, after a less-than-stellar performance by the GOP in the midterm elections, many of Trump’s advisers are asking him to delay his presidential announcement again, but to little avail, according to Axios.
“I think the people who wanted him to delay the announcement were well-intentioned, but just didn’t think it all the way through,” a Trumpworld adviser told the outlet. “After announcing his announcement, had he delayed it, he would have gotten destroyed in the media for being weak and probably would have caused him even more long-term damage.”

Many GOP candidates Trump endorsed ahead of the midterm elections, including Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz, Michigan gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon, and Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, have lost their elections to their Democratic opponents. The runoff election on Dec. 6 between Trump-endorsed candidate Herschel Walker and incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) is one of the reasons Trump’s advisers are asking the former president to delay any announcement regarding 2024 further.
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich stated on Wednesday that he believed Trump was reconsidering his plans for another presidential run in response to the midterm results. Gingrich said that he knows Trump is a “very, very smart man” who worked “very hard” leading up to the election by attending multiple rallies but that the former president had to have looked at the midterm results and “be troubled.”
Several prominent members of the GOP, including former Vice President Mike Pence and Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, are choosing to move on from Trump and focus their energy on another candidate, with many pointing to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, one of the few definite Republican winners of this year’s midterm elections. Club for Growth Action, a conservative organization, released polling data on Monday showing DeSantis leading Trump by double digits in several key states.

DeSantis has not yet made any announcement regarding the 2024 presidential election, though that has not stopped several Republicans from throwing his name into the ring. Billionaire Republican megadonor Ken Griffin stated that he is ready to support a presidential bid by DeSantis in 2024, according to an interview released on Nov. 6.
