House Republicans to make leadership pitch ahead of conference elections

Members of the House Republican Conference will gather in the congressional auditorium on Monday to hear from leadership hopefuls amid uncertainty over whether House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) can lock down the support needed to secure the speaker’s gavel in the wake of underwhelming election night results.

The candidate forum comes as a sizable number of members and incoming members have called for a delay in holding the vote, which is conducted in a closed-ballot format, until after the majority is called.

The lackluster election results have sparked a likely challenge by former House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs (R-AZ) against the California Republican, aware that he also does not have the 218 votes needed to lock down the gavel.

Among the Republicans who will lay out their cases are National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Emmer (R-MN), Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Banks (R-IN), and Chief Deputy Whip Drew Ferguson (R-GA), who have been engaged in a heated race for House majority whip; Reps. Richard Hudson (R-NC) and Darin LaHood (R-IL), both of whom are seeking to be the next National Republican Congressional Committee chairman; current House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who is looking to retain her position as she faces challenger Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL); and Reps. Lisa McClain (R-MI), Andrew Clyde (R-GA), and Glenn Grothmann (R-WI), who are vying to be conference secretary.
