Fairfax County Democrat’s bizarre rant about Battle of Iwo Jima should be rebuked

Iwo Jima Flag Raising Identities
In this Feb 23, 1945 file photo, U.S. Marines of the 28th Regiment, 5th Division, raise the American flag atop Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, Japan. The Marine Corps has corrected the identify of another of the men who were photographed raising the American flag at Iwo Jima during World War II. The Marines said Thursday that after questions were raised by private historians who studied photos and films, it determined that Cpl. Harold P. Keller was among the six men who raised the flag. The Marines say Pfc. Rene Gagnon had helped in the effort but for decades was mistakenly identified by the Marines as one of the flag-raisers. Joe Rosenthal/AP

In today’s society, there’s an endless cycle of perpetual victimization in the oppression Olympics regarding who can claim to be the most offended or aggrieved. This tiresome act was on full display recently during a school board meeting when one member of the board implied she was discriminated against for being Muslim because many people were confused by her statements that described the World War II Battle of Iwo Jima as “evil.”

Apparently, confusingly vague statements made by “woke” educators are yet another thing that is discriminatory in this country.

DEMOCRAT BLAMES FOX NEWS FOR BALTIMORE’S FAILING SCHOOLS

Abrar Omeish, a Democrat and Fairfax County School Board member, made the inflammatory remarks at a meeting while discussing some of the well-known historical events that occurred in February. Many people were upset over her description of Iwo Jima and her failure to specify as to what she meant by “evil.”

“There’s also a lot of history in February. A number of community members reached out to me just a few days ago. It was Japanese Day of Remembrance,” Omeish said. “Just something for us to reflect on as we learn our history and think about it. The days when Iwo Jima unfortunately happened and set a record for really what I hate to say human evil is capable of. So that’s something just to remember, especially actually in advance of Holocaust Remembrance Day.”

On its own, this statement can be interpreted in several ways. Iwo Jima is considered a pivotal American battle in the Pacific Theater of the war and is recognized as one of the United States Marines’ most historically significant victories. Given this legacy, describing it as evil without explanation could be offensive. Yet, when pressed to elaborate, Omeish claimed her comments were misrepresented and, as a result, “Islamophobic.”

Omeish tried to explain her comments, but she only made things worse. She criticized the Japanese for their brutal tactics but then attempted to equate their ruthlessness with Japanese internment camps in the United States in the 1940s. Yet much of what she claimed was historically inaccurate.

Consider the lack of documented facts regarding her statement about the internment camps.

“At the same time, our own government also knew in Feb. 1945 that the overwhelming number of 120,000 incarcerated Japanese Americans posed no threat to American security. By that time, the Japanese American 442 Infantry Regiment was already well on its way to becoming the most decorated American military unit in WWII,” Omeish said. “The refusal of our own government to release the Japanese prisoners was and should continue to be condemned. Our government’s actions were also not right.”

First, Japanese internment camps have absolutely nothing to do with the Battle of Iwo Jima. There is no connection between them; any attempt to link the two is a logical fallacy. It is a false equivalency. Second, it is inaccurate to say there weren’t any Japanese espionage efforts in the country during World War II. The MAGIC intercepts, diplomatic cables intercepted by U.S. intelligence during the war, revealed “ethnic Japanese had been ‘utilized’ for espionage.”

Furthermore, the MAGIC intercepts revealed that the Empire of Japan was using Nisei, second-generation Japanese immigrants, to spy. One of the messages intercepted by U.S. intelligence expanded on Japan’s intentions and efforts.

“We shall maintain connection with our second generations who are at present in the (U.S.) Army, to keep us informed of various developments in the Army. We also have connections with our second generations working in airplane plants for intelligence purposes,” one of the intercepted messages from Japan read.

Omeish’s response is typical of contemporary left-wing politicians who harbor strong anti-American sentiments. She put her foot in her mouth and tried to weasel out of dealing with repercussions. As the Left typically do when mired in controversy, Omeish played the discrimination card. But no one should believe this nonsense.

In reality, racism, Islamophobia, or any other bogus claim of the perpetually aggrieved had nothing to do with the pushback she faced. People have grown tired of hearing such radical left-wing propaganda and a distorted version of history that demonizes the country. She was rebuked because her comments were ignorant and inflammatory.

It’s a lesson for all to challenge these toxic Democrats at every opportunity when they make such comments. They must learn that the vile hatred people like Omeish have for the country will no longer be tolerated. Their outlandish claims should constantly be challenged and outright rejected.
