Texas lawmakers working to allow chickens in backyards amid rising egg prices

Texas lawmakers have introduced a series of new legislation that would see Texans have a chicken in every backyard as egg prices continue to soar across the country.
Citizens of the Lone Star State are being charged up to $9 for a dozen eggs at certain locations, according to a report.

“One reporter in Houston interviewed a backyard producer who told them this is the first time ever that it’s been cheaper to produce eggs than buy them at the store,” David Anderson, an AgriLife Extension economist from Bryan-College Station, said about a new U.S. Department of Agriculture retail egg report.
Recognizing the demand, increasing prices, and hampered supply, Texas lawmakers have proposed bills that just might have egg-laying hens in backyards across the state, according to the report.
A family could have up to six chickens in a residential lot with “reasonable restrictions,” one bill proposed in the state Senate read.
These restrictions include the prohibition of breeding and distance regulations.

Odor concerns, noise regulations, and sanitation inquiries are also addressed across the various bills, the report noted.
