Magnitude 6.8 earthquake reported on China-Tajikistan border

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 6.8 earthquake on the China-Tajikistan border.

The earthquake occurred at 5:37 a.m. local time at a depth of 12.7 miles, with the epicenter in the Gorno-Badakhshan region. It was followed by four different aftershocks of lesser severity within the next hour and a half. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre gave a nearly identical reading, although the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences gave the measurement of magnitude 6.7 at a depth of 6.2 miles.

Meanwhile, the China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the quake was magnitude 7.2 and 6.2 miles deep.

The area is sparsely populated, and the USGS estimated that “little or no population” will be exposed to landslides due to the quake.

The earthquake comes just weeks after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake rocked southern Turkey and Syria, killing tens of thousands.
