THE DIVIDING LINE IN THE GOP OVER TRUMP AND DESANTIS: POLL
Smith was appointed by the Justice Department to oversee the various investigations into Trump in November 2022, after he announced his candidacy for president in 2024. The investigations include his alleged role in the Jan. 6 riot along with his alleged mishandling of classified documents.
Trump’s daughter and son-in-law were key members of the administration, being a part of the former president’s inner circle during his time in office. It is currently unknown if they will challenge the subpoena, per the Times report.
Smith has also subpoenaed former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows and former Vice President Mike Pence. Pence is fighting the subpoena, citing the separation of powers, noting that he was serving in his role as president of the Senate during the riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
