WATCH: Bob Woodward tells The View Trump’s selfishness was ‘threat to democracy’

Journalist Bob Woodward, famous for breaking the Watergate story that led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation, joined The View on Friday and characterized the selfishness of former President Donald Trump and the threat it poses to democracy.
“At a strategic point where he has to protect the country, he moves to protect Trump,” he said. Not only is this “a threat to democracy,” according to Woodward, but it shows that “he does not understand the job of being president.”
Woodward explained that there’s a common theme among presidents, and it’s that they view the office as a “sacred trust” where “you have to look out for the people, not just yourself.”

“Trump, in these tapes, everything, it’s all about him,” he said, referencing his audio archive of 20 interviews with the former president titled The Trump Tapes.
He further told the hosts that he can see voters liking Trump but believing that it’s time to usher in a new era. “I think that was the message from Tuesday,” he said. “We need to move on, and so we are at a pivot point in history right now, this week.”
Despite the shift in support, Woodward said, “I think he’ll announce. I mean, that’s what he’s telling people,” discussing Trump’s scheduled announcement on Tuesday.
Following a midterm election performance from Republicans that underperformed what polls had forecast, the party has seemed to signal support for a new candidate in 2024 — Gov. Ron DeSantis. Notably, DeSantis and Republicans in the state of Florida performed exceedingly well, a strong contrast against the rest of the country.

Trump has become agitated by talk of a 2024 challenge from DeSantis, blasting him as “average” on Thursday, and taking credit for his political stardom.
