An elderly woman in Florida shot and killed an armed intruder after he broke into her home early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. when the 67-year-old woman woke up after hearing her front door handle shaking, according to a report.

Believing it could be her husband coming home from work, she opened the door, and Reginald Best, 64, forced his way in with a firearm, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said.

The woman repeatedly asked Best to leave, but he refused, and, fearing for her life, she used her own firearm to fatally shoot the intruder, authorities said.

Prior to breaking into the woman’s home, Best called authorities and stated that he was hiding from “people in orange,” the report noted.

A woman also called dispatch and informed them that Best had gone out a window armed with a firearm and had started running down the street.

“It’s unfortunate that Best was struggling with some apparently profound issues and posed a deadly threat to the victim and her family,” Sheriff H.D. “Gator” DeLoach said.

“She absolutely had the right to defend herself, and I’m grateful that her decisive action stopped the threat and eliminated the risk of further loss of life, making her entire neighborhood safer.”
