Couple finds 1.9-carat diamond at Crater of Diamonds State Park for 10th anniversary

A Minnesota couple found a 1.9-carat brown diamond on their visit to Arkansas’s Crater of Diamonds State Park.
Jessica and Seth Erickson stopped by the crater during their 10th-anniversary road trip in which they visited a total of 11 national parks. They took some dirt from the 37.5-acre diamond search area and wet-sifted it for about an hour before Seth found the pony-bead-sized diamond. Staff at the Diamond Discovery Center were able to register it as 1.9 carats.
The Ericksons named their diamond HIMO, the initials of all their children.

“581 diamonds have been registered at Crater of Diamonds State Park in 2022,” the park wrote in a press release Wednesday. “An average of one to two diamonds are found by park visitors each day.”
About three-fourths of all diamonds found at the park are found via wet sifting, as the Ericksons found theirs.

John Wesley Huddleston found the first diamond in Arkansas’s Pike County in 1906, according to the park’s website. He would go on to buy the land, a 160-acre farm, where he found the diamond. This land, which would become the state park, was eventually sold for $36,000.
