San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins seeks waiver to ‘sanctuary city’ policy

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins is asking for a waiver to San Francisco’s sanctuary city designation so she can arrest two people suspected of a violent crime who have fled the country.
City laws prohibit the district attorney from working with federal immigration officials on deportation matters. Getting cooperation from the Department of Homeland Security on an extradition to a sanctuary city could be sticky as well, KTVU reported.

“We won’t let dangerous criminals evade prosecution simply by leaving the United States,” Jenkins said. “What we can’t allow in San Francisco are for people to commit heinous crimes like murder or child rape and then just be able to flee our jurisdiction and avoid prosecution.”
Background information on the suspects was not available. Jenkins would only say that a man was wanted in connection with a 2009 domestic violence murder and that the second suspect had multiple warrants for child sexual abuse.
Jenkins said she supports San Francisco’s sanctuary city stance but that these two cases are unique circumstances.
“We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our immigrant communities and fight for the progress we’ve achieved in this City. We are a sanctuary city, now, tomorrow and forever,” the mayor’s website says.
However, Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin said he supports Jenkins’s request and accused federal officers of dawdling in apprehending the suspects.

“Rather than waiting for laws to be tinkered with, which takes time even in the fastest of circumstances, the feds should discharge their duty and apprehend these individuals and extradite them here to San Francisco,” Peskin told KTVU.
Jenkins was appointed by Mayor London Breed to fill the unexpired term of Chesa Boudin after his recall last summer. A centrist Democrat, Jenkins gained widespread support in the community over her tough-on-crime stance. She was elected to a four-year term in November.
