The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention failed repeatedly to provide responsible, reasonable guidance during the pandemic. Under Director Rochelle Walensky, the plan seems to be to keep those failures in place forever.

Walensky said the CDC is not planning to update its existing masking guidance, which includes masking recommendations for schools. “Our masking guidance doesn’t really change with time,” Walensky said. “What it changes with is disease. So when there’s a lot of disease in the community, we recommend that those communities and those schools mask. When there’s less disease in the community, we recommend that those masks can come off.”

MSNBC PUNDITS CHIDE STATE OF THE UNION ATTENDEES: WHERE ARE THE MASKS?!

This is delusional, and it is damaging to children. Walensky boasted that schools that did not implement mask mandates saw more children get sick and miss school, which is contradicted by studies that showed that mask mandates did not stop the spread of COVID. Even the CDC’s own studies showed this in 2021, which the agency ignored as it continued to promote mandatory masking for children.

But, even if it were true that masking helped keep children from missing a couple of days of school (say, with the flu, not just COVID), that does not vindicate the CDC. The purpose of masking was not to prevent children from missing a few days of school, something that has happened to children who got sick for years before the pandemic. The purpose was to stop the spread of COVID, which it did not accomplish, and to protect vulnerable populations, which children are not.

Instead, masking did far more damage to children than the virus. Masking was associated with decreases in communication and the development of socialization skills in children and increases in anxiety and depression. Masking children did not protect them from anything, but it did incredible damage to their mental and emotional health. Masking was even associated with physical declines, including headaches, face rashes, and tooth decay.

There is no justification for any COVID restrictions for children. There never has been. And yet the CDC and Walensky continue to promote it and apparently plan for this guidance, which has continued to be used by cities and schools to impose restrictions, to remain in place indefinitely. This is the legacy of COVID safetyism, and it must be stamped out entirely at the CDC.
