
Biden State of the Union ratings drop sharply, second-least watched address in 30 years

President Joe Biden‘s 2023 State of the Union address saw a nearly 30% drop in television viewership compared with his 2022 speech.
Data from Nielsen show an estimated 27.3 million people tuned into the address over various networks, down drastically from the more than 38.1 million who watched his 2022 address.

The viewership is the lowest for an official State of the Union address since viewership data collection began in 1993. Only Biden’s 2021 unofficial State of the Union, officially known as an address to a joint session of Congress, had fewer viewers, with only 26.9 million people tuning in.
The most watched official State of the Union was President George W. Bush’s 2003 address, which saw 62 million people tune in. President Bill Clinton’s 1993 unofficial State of the Union saw 66 million viewers.

The most-watched network for the 2023 address was Fox News Channel, which had 4.7 million viewers. ABC had 4.4 million viewers, NBC had 3.8 million viewers, CBS had 3.6 million viewers, MSNBC had 3.6 million viewers, CNN had 2.4 million viewers, and Fox had 1.7 million viewers.
Biden’s 2023 address was roughly 73 minutes long, approximately 11 minutes longer than his 2022 speech. The longest State of the Union address was in 2000, when Clinton spoke for nearly 89 minutes.
