Charles Kimbrough dead: Murphy Brown actor dies at 86

Charles Kimbrough, who portrayed newsman Jim Dial on the hit sitcom Murphy Brown, has died at 86 years old.
Kimbrough died on Jan. 11, his son John Kimbrough reportedly confirmed to the Associated Press. He died in Culver City, California.

The show began in 1988 and ran until 1998. It followed the life of titular character, television reporter Murphy Brown.
Kimbrough’s character Dial was a polished and serious, Walter Cronkite-esque 1980’s news anchor.
The actor’s credits aren’t limited to the lovable sitcom, however, and he received a Tony nomination in 1971 for best featured actor in a musical for portraying Harry in the original production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company.

He further received award nods for his character on Murphy Brown. In 1990, he was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at the Primetime Emmy awards. The show’s entire cast was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series at the 1995 Screen Actors Guild awards.
A cause of death has not been given.
